LINK-ITALIA

Association for Social Advancement

Established in 2009 as a Project and then turned into an Association for social advancement in 2012, LINK-ITALIA is the first association of professionals in Italy who aim to bridge the serious scientific, cultural and social gaps about the orrelation (LINK) between animal abuse and human violence as well as any other antisocial, criminal and deviant behavior.

PUBLICATIONS

The acquired knowledge about the LINK was investigated, developed and systematized for the first time by developing a new branch of zooanthropology, the Zooanthropology of Deviance. This new branch uses the contributions of disciplines such as pedagogy and sociology of deviance, criminology, victimology, psychiatry, criminal psychology, ecopsychology, ecopedagogy, evolutionary psychology, ethology, investigative and veterinary sciences, through a scientific and metaphorical approach. Among the innovative theoretical contents of this discipline, the first Classification of Crime on Animals (inspired by the Crime Classification Manual), the Criminal Zooanthropological Profile of the Abuser or Slayer of Animals (Criminal Profiling), the Zooanthropological Investigation and Autopsy are to be mentioned. For the first time in the criminological field, the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) chemometric analysis was applied for the data

analysis, which allowed to scientifically detect new variables that had never emerged so far, not even at an international level.

Memorandum of Understanding concerning the Maltreatment of animals, Interpersonal Violence, Crime and Deviance signed on November 27, 2015 by Francesca Sorcinelli LINK-ITALIA, Pierangelo Baratta, First Officer of the STATE FORESTRY CORPS Provincial Command, the Representatives of the Distretto Ceramico (the supra-municipal union of the municipalities of Sassuolo, Maranello, Formigine), the Province of Modena and Igmar Spada, Chairman of the Veterinary Association of Modena. The memorandum will involve the establishment of the first Technical Board on the LINK in Italy made up of the Environment / Animal Rights offices representatives from each municipality, Municipal Police Commands. The board will also be attended by a Coordinator of the State Forestry Corps, LINK-ITALIA (APS) and the Veterinary Association of Modena.

Being the first Memorandum of Understanding signed by a State Police Corps and a professional association, this memorandum has involved the establishment of the first multidisciplinary team composed of members from State Forestry Corps and LINK-ITALIA. The team is aimed at studying the zooanthropological profile of the animal abuser and killer. In this context the SFC has appointed the NIRDA (Investigative Unit for Crimes Against Animals) to carry out investigations in this particular field.

EVALUATIONS ON SOCIAL DANGEROUSNESS OF CONDUCT OF CRUELTY AGAINST ANIMALS IN CRIMINAL COURT CASES

The tight work in data collection and development of specific Investigative instruments and evaluation on social dangerousness of conduct of cruelty against animals has always been aimed at using them in criminal proceedings as a fundamental technical contribution to the development of judgments qualitatively appropriate to the state of the current legislative possibilities and which (albeit too mild to the crimes in question) are today a fundamental historical step not only in the proper application of the law regarding Maltreatment and / or Killing Animals, but also about the reflection on what this law is urgently to be revised through a tightening of the penalties.

The following are Criminal Proceedings in which for the first time in Italy a specific assessment of the Social Dangerousness of Conduct of cruelty against animals was presented.

Cats’ serial killer - Trescore Balneario (Bergamo). The defendant was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months imprisonment and 2 years of probation (Judgment delivered at first instance by the Court of Bergamo on 1 March 2017).

The case was a real Link Case. The man adopted kittens from the shelter’s volunteers and then tortured and killed them, often crushing them to his chest. Then he cooked and ate them. Torture was filmed and sent to volunteers along with sexual proposals and insults. The Killer, who had criminal background, has been diagnosed, during the Criminal Procedure, as an Antisocial Personality Disorder and has been declared mentally fit (capable of understanding and wanting).

An Assessment of the Social Dangerousness of conduct of cruelty against animals was presented in Criminal Procedure no. 3305/2015 R.G. Pending at Bergamo Criminal Court, on behalf of the National Animal Protection Association Onlus.

In addition to the process of maltreatment and killing of animals, he was also tried for stalking and sentenced to 2 years of unconditional imprisonment, a year of probation and to the payment of the amount 13,000 to the victim and for trial expenses.

Dog Angelo case - Sangineto (Cosenza). The four defendants were sentenced to 1 year and 4 months with suspension of punishment under 6 months of voluntary service. (Judgment delivered at first instance by the Paola Criminal Court on May 26, 2017).

The case: four boys just over twenty-year-old hung a dog, killing him by beating and then they posted it on facebook.

An Assessment of the Social Dangerousness of conduct of cruelty against animals was presented in Criminal Procedure n. 1221 \ 2016 pending the Criminal Court of Paola, on behalf of the National Animal Protection Association and the International Organization for Animal Protection Onlus.

Seagull case - Siniscola (Nuoro). The defendant was sentenced to 1 year and 4 months imprisonment and 1 year and 6 months of probation. (Judgment issued at first instance by the Criminal Court of Nuoro on 31 July 2017).

The case: a fisherman with an accomplice tied a petard on the back of a gull that exploded in flight. The act was filmed and posted on the internet.

An Assessment of the Social Dangerousness of conduct of cruelty against animals was presented in Criminal Procedure no. RGNR 25/16 pending at the Criminal Court of Nuoro, on behalf of the National Animal Protection Association Onlus.

Snoopy the dog case – Livorno. The defendant was sentenced with suspension of punishment and to the payment of the amount of 500,00 euros to the Municipality of Livorno and to the payment of 15.000,00 euros to the owners of the dog. Judgment issued by the Criminal Court of Livorno.

An assessment of the Social Dangerousness of conduct of cruelty against animals was presented in Criminal Procedure no. 3506/15 pending at the Criminal Court of Livorno, on behalf of the Vincenzoni-Lucisano family’s Attorney Mr.De Pasquale and on behalf of the Animal Protection Associations which brought Civil Action.

AGREEMENTS

Since April 2014, LINK - ITALIA (APS) has been accredited by CROAS Lombardia (Lombardy's Regional Council of the Social Workers Association) for the Continuing Education of Social Workers.

Since June 2015, LINK-ITALIA (APS) has been accredited by CROAS Puglia (Apulia's Regional Council of the Social Workers Association) for the Continuing Education of Social Workers.

TENDERS

Thanks to winning a project tender for the ASL (the local health centre), funded by the Lombardy Region about family support projects, the contents of LINK-ITALIA (APS) have been the subject of a joint project regarding the Province of Como throughout 2011. The Project "LINK - Cruelty on Animals and Domestic Violence Against Women and Children" has committed us to the realization of events aimed at raising awareness among citizens, and of professional training in collaboration with the Municipality of Como, the school complex Como Nord, Ciao Como Radio and various animal welfare organizations. During this phase we also created the first LINK commercial and the brochure “(Dis-)Education in Violence”, edited by Francesca Sorcinelli.

TRAINING AND AWARENESS EVENTS

Since the beginning, one of the Association’s major target has been the training of professional figures and the sensitization of the common citizens about the LINK.

With this objective:

LINK-ITALY (APS) is participating in the Training Project for the Police called "At the root of the Violence" conceived and promoted by the Center for Legality, Security and Justice, whose President is D. Marco Strano Chief Technical Director (Psychologist) of the Italian Police. October, 2017.

LINK-ITALIA (APS) in the person of its President Francesca Sorcinelli joined the Scientific Committee of the Interregional Local Police Association and the Zooanthropology of Deviance has become curricular subject of the FormazioneSenzaConfini Project. September, 2017.

LINK-ITALIA (APS) has contributed with its scripts and slides to the realization of the e-learning module “Link per le attività di Polizia” used by the State Police to train its officiers. This works testimonial the first official knowledge of the phenomenon by the State Police Corp. August, 2017.

The Zooanthropology of Deviance has become curricular subject of the Assistential Zooanthropology (Pet Therapy) advanced course at the S.I.U.A. – Istituto di Formazione Zooantropologica, Galliera (BO) 2016.
